What’s a Neurogenic Bladder?

Neurogenic Bladder (NGB) is a common phrase used to describe the dysfunction of the bladder that occurs from a neurological issue such as a stroke, Parkinson’s Disease, Spinal Cord Injury at any level, Multiple Sclerosis, Peripheral or Central Neuropathies, Alzheimer’s, Shy-Drager, Guillain-Barre, Tabes Dorsalis, Traumatic Brain Injury, and Hydrocephalus.

It may also occur after radiation to the brain, spinal cord, or pelvis, and from nerve damage potentially from any surgery in the pelvis, or spinal surgeries (fusion, laminectomy).

NGB can result in Overactive Bladder, Underactive Bladder, Urinary Retention, Urinary Incontinence, Kidney and Bladder Infections, Bladder Stones, or a combination of these.

Fecal retention or fecal incontinence can co-exist with NGB as well from the same neurological process.

Diagnosis and Treatment

A carefully performed evaluation is necessary to improve bladder and bowel movements to enable optimal functionality. There is a myriad of treatment options which can include medications, lifestyle changes, catheter usage, or surgery.
